Event: Rent the Musical

Event: Rent the Musical

Had an unconvential pre-Valentines celeb — it wasn’t the usual movie dinner rose event. Why? For Feb 2011, my pre-Valentine’s day was spent watching 9 Works Theatrical’s RENT 2011. T’was extremely unconvential given that Rent is not exactly the usual love story couples watch during Valentine’s season.

“Rent is the 7th longest running show in Broadway history. Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boheme, it tells a story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.

The musical was first seen in a limited three-week Workshop production at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same New York City off-Broadway theatre was also the musical’s initial home following its official January 25, 1996, opening. The show’s creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premier. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit.

On Broadway, RENT gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musial among other awards. It has since had a filmed version released, and is fondly remembered. It is an extremely popular musical and really stands out amongst the crowd. Whether you love West Side Story or you’re usually more into musicales than Broadway shows, it’s worth checking out. Definitely the Philadelphia of the musical world with its hard-hitting subject matter. The musical is largely responsible for helping to increase the popularity of musical theater amongst the younger generation. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after a 12-year run and 5,124 performances, making it the eight longest-running Broadway show, nine years behind The Phantom of the Opera as of December 2009. The production grossed over $280 million.

The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions, and in 2005, it was also adapted into a motion picture that features most of the original cast members. Productions involving high school students have generated controversy.”

I’ve watched both the motion picture and the videographed Broadway play in DVD. None of which showcased Mimi doing a long pole-dancing session. Watching 9 Work’s Rent inspired me further to take up pole dancing lessons – – if only one of my girlfriends would go with me. Any takers, girls?

Yes, the show was adapted into a motion picture. A motion picture that I originally watched last year in Fundacion Pacita in a chilly raining afternoon in Batanes. Since then, I’ve always loved RENT!

Six months after my Batanes Rent introduction, a very good friend lent me her RENT video, documenting RENT’s last Broadway performance. Been looking for a copy of that video since then.

I will always heart heart heart “Seasons of Love” and “No Day But Today.”

“Seasons of Love”

Five hundred twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand
moments so dear
Five hundred twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year

In daylight, in sunsets, in midnights,
in cups of coffee, In inches, in miles
in laughter in strife,

In Five hundred twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in the life

How about Love
how about love
how about love
measure in love
seasons of love
seasons of love

No Day But Today

The Heart May Freeze Or It Can burn
The Pain Will Ease If I Can Learn

There Is no future
There Is no past
Thank God this moment’s not my last

There’s Only Us
There’s Only This
Forget, Regret, Or Life Is Yours To Miss
No Other Road
No Other Way
No Day But Today

There’s Only Yes
Only Tonight
We Must Let Go
To Know What’s Right
No Other Course
No Other Way

No Day But Today

I Cant control
My destiny
I Trust My Soul
My only goal
is just to be

There’ only Now
There’s Only Here
Give in To Love
Or live in Fear
No Other Path
No Other Way
No Day But Today
