Food Trip: Van Gogh is Bipolar

Van Gogh is Bipolar takes healthy and happy eating to a new level by only serving natural and organic food that help produce happy hormones. This restaurant offers an array of happy dishes carefully created to cater to different kinds of people in different mood levels — just chilling, anxious, agitated, stressed out, angry, depressed, etc.

Note that this is no ordinary restaurant. The interior resembles a cozy home inclusive of a cozy living room, small study area, a dining room, and a dark room-transformed-to-washroom. Ten guests can comfortably fit inside. For guests who would want to stay outside, Jetro (Van Gogh’s owner) has set up low tables and mats in the garden.

Have I mentioned that this is no ordinary restaurant? Aside from the fact that the restaurant serves ‘happy food’ and that it is by and large a house-converted-to-a-resto, note that there are no waiters to attend to your needs. The restaurant is self-service. For ordering, menu is available right by the door. You have to go to the small window near the kitchen, write your name and preferred dishes on a piece of paper, and ring the bell. The cook will take your order. You can also custom-make your own tea. Several intricately designed teapots are available beside the kitchen window. Feel free to choose your own teapot and create your own tea.

The ‘Van Gogh is Bipolar’ menu is interesting. It follows a theme by having dishes named after famous bipolars such as Van Gogh, President Clinton, President Roosevelt, Larry Flynt, Mel Gibson, etc. The restaurant serves food that help induce the happy-state-of-feeling such as organic salad, salmon, mackarel, lamb, turkey, mountain rice, etc.

Van Gogh is Bipolar is not just a restaurant. It is also an art space. Jetro usually personally welcomes his guests to his restaurant, points to a wall where he artistically scribbled some quotes, drew some pictures, or arranged some art decors. Feel free to add to his art collection by writing your sentiments on the red wall inside the living room.

Good food + Great ambiance + Absolutely amazing and unique experience. I give this restaurant two thumbs up. The ambiance of dining in a house-converted-to-a-resto and the experience of ordering your food and getting your food from the small kitchen window gives you the feeling that your are dining in a friend’s apartment rather than a restaurant when you walk through the door.  Jetro mah friend, I’ll definitely go back to Van Gogh.
